Will a smart deadbolt fit my door? A 5-minute check

Smart deadbolt fitted to different door styles

Most smart deadbolt problems start before the box is opened: the door is too thick, the hole is in the wrong place, or the door faces the weather. A tape measure and five minutes will tell you whether the lock will fit. The sizes below are for the ReNSol RNSV-CA229F01BN smart deadbolt.

1. Measure the door thickness

Open the door and measure the edge from face to face. The lock fits doors 35–55 mm (1⅜″–2⅛″) thick. The box includes two sets of screws, one for 35–45 mm doors and one for 45–55 mm doors, so note which range yours falls in.

2. Measure the backset

The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the existing deadbolt hole. The latch adjusts to 60 mm (2⅜″) or 70 mm (2¾″), the two common sizes in North America.

3. Check the bore hole

The lock is made for a standard 54 mm (2⅛″) deadbolt hole. If you're replacing an ordinary single-cylinder deadbolt, you most likely have this size already.

4. Check the door is flat and true

The manual is clear that the door surface should be flat and level. A warped door or one with gaps around the lock area can stop the bolt from throwing cleanly. If your current deadbolt sticks, fix the door alignment or strike plate first.

5. Check where the door is

The lock is rated for −10 °C to 55 °C and 10–95% humidity. That makes it a good fit for condo and apartment suite doors, office doors and sheltered entries. It is not for doors exposed to rain, snow or temperatures below −10 °C, which rules out most exposed exterior doors in a Canadian winter. Read more in Smart locks in a Canadian winter.

6. Check your Wi-Fi reaches the door

PIN, fingerprint, card, key and Bluetooth app unlocking all work without Wi-Fi. Remote unlocking, alerts away from home and the camera doorbell need the lock connected to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Stand at the door with your phone: if your Wi-Fi is weak there, plan for an extender.
