Smart locks in a Canadian winter: which doors they suit

Interior side of the smart deadbolt with battery box and thumb knob

Every electronic lock has an operating range. The ReNSol RNSV-CA229F01BN smart deadbolt is rated for −10 °C to 55 °C and 10–95% humidity. In much of Canada, an exposed front door gets colder than −10 °C for days at a time in winter, so where you install the lock matters.

Doors it suits

  • Condo and apartment suite doors that open onto a heated hallway.
  • Office and interior doors, such as a suite entrance, server room or storage room.
  • Sheltered entries where the outside face of the lock stays dry and above −10 °C.

Doors to avoid

Don't install it on a door where the outside panel is exposed to rain or snow, or where it can drop below −10 °C. Cold outside the rated range can affect the battery and electronics, and damage from temperatures outside the rated range isn't covered by the warranty.

Battery tips

  • Use only the supplied 2,500 mAh lithium battery pack. Ordinary alkaline batteries aren't supported.
  • A full charge is rated for about 1,000 unlocks, roughly 3.5 months of normal use. Watch for the low-battery alert in the TTLock app.
  • If the battery runs flat, you're not locked out: connect a power bank to the USB-C emergency port on the front panel and enter your code, or use one of the two manual keys.
