Guest access for short-term rentals: codes, eKeys and cards in TTLock

Smart deadbolt keypad for guest passcodes

A smart lock lets you send each guest their own way in and take it away when they leave. The ReNSol RNSV-CA229F01BN smart deadbolt is managed in the free TTLock app, which offers three kinds of access: passcodes, eKeys and cards. Here is when to use each one.

Passcodes: best for most guests

A passcode works on the keypad, so the guest doesn't need an app. TTLock offers these types:

  • Timed: works between the start and end times you set. Use it for a stay.
  • Recurring: repeats weekly during set hours, for example every Saturday 10:00–20:00. Use it for regular cleaners or dog walkers.
  • One-time: works once, within 6 hours of the start time. Use it for a one-off delivery or repair visit.
  • Permanent: never expires until you delete it. Keep these for yourself and co-hosts.
  • Clearing code: valid for 24 hours. Entering it on the lock cancels all previously used passcodes.

The 24-hour rule: a new passcode must be used once within 24 hours of its start time, or it stops working. Set the start time to the check-in day, not the booking date, and tell guests to try their code on arrival.

eKeys: for people who will use the app

An eKey lets someone unlock with the TTLock app on their own phone. eKeys can be permanent, timed, recurring or one-time (a one-time eKey is valid for 1 hour and works once). You can share them by email or a messaging app. eKeys suit co-hosts and property managers more than short-stay guests.

Cards: for staff

RFID cards can be permanent, time-limited or recurring. They are quick for cleaners and maintenance staff, and you can cancel a lost card in the app. Two cards come in the box.

How many people can it hold?

Up to 250 passcode groups, 1,000 cards and 100 fingerprints, which is plenty for a busy rental.

A simple turnover routine

  1. Before each stay, send a timed passcode that starts on check-in day and ends at check-out.
  2. After check-out, check the unlock history in the app and delete any codes you no longer need.
  3. Check the battery level in the app. A full charge lasts about 1,000 unlocks (about 3.5 months); busy rentals will need charging more often.

Remote changes (sending a code while you're away) need the lock connected to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Without Wi-Fi you manage the lock over Bluetooth when you're nearby.
